Kamiak wins opener in dramatic fashion

MUKILTEO — Dramatically late was still early enough for Kamiak in a tough season-opening softball game with Lake Stevens on Wednesday.

Trailing Lake Stevens by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Knights managed to pull out a 7-6 victory.

Kamiak pitcher Alyssa Malland, who picked up the win, had the game-winning hit with a an RBI single.

“We’ve played Lake Stevens in the preseason and in the postseason for a number of years, and it’s always a close game,” Kamiak head coach Bill Bowker said. “But I was just proud of my girls for coming back the way they did.”

Kamiak trailed 6-4 entering the bottom of the seventh. The Knights rallied with a pair of base hits and a walk to load the bases, but were still down two runs after two outs. Lake Stevens committed errors on the next two plays, allowing Kamiak to tie the score, before Malland knocked in the game-winner.

The Knights had 11 hits and Lake Stevens added eight.

“That was a little surprising,” Bowker said. “Usually, this early in the season, pitchers have an advantage over hitters.”

Kamiak took an early lead with two runs in the second, but Lake Stevens responded by scoring its first in the third, two in the fifth and then three more in the sixth.

Malland started the game on the mound, was relieved by Kim Kochik in the fifth, then went back to the mound in the sixth to earn the win.
