Lakewood drop opener to Mt. Vernon

LAKEWOOD — Lakewood’s Karli Hesselman won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but it wasn’t enough for the Cougars, who dropped their tennis season opener 5-2 to Mount Vernon on Wednesday.
“I was really pleased with Karli’s performance,” Lakewood coach Bob Walker said. “She really steadied and had a nice win.”
Lakewood was playing without twins Jillian and Jocelyn Shafer — the No. 1 doubles team — who were out of town.
“We were a little short-handed today,” Walker added.
The Cougars’ other win came at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Hannah Ross teamed with exchange student Yuka Asano to win 7-5, 6-1, which also pleased Walker.
“They were both playing in their first match ever and it was a nice win for them,” he said.
