Prep roundup: Barker strikes out 18 as Cedarcrest beats Murphy 3-0 in 10 innings

EVERETT — It required 10 innings and a mass of strikeouts.
And, if not for the international tiebreaker rule, it might have taken a lot more.
With the help of that rule, Cedarcrest managed a key 3-0 Cascade Conference victory at Archbishop Murphy on Wednesday in a game that went three extra innings and included a combined 34 strikeouts.
Cedarcrest’s Hillary Barker fanned 18 batters in posting a three-hit shutout for the win. Archbishop Murphy’s Brittany Allen took a tough loss, striking out 16 while pitching a complete game.
“It was a total pitcher’s duel,” Archbishop Murphy head coach Linsi Moy said. “It was nerve-racking, because we just kept waiting for someone to make something happen. In a game like that, the slightest little bobble or something means so much.”
When the game went into the 10th inning, the team at bat began the inning with a runner on second base — thanks to the international tiebreaker rule.
The Red Wolves broke the game open in the top of the 10th as Barker singled home a run and Samantha Boelter followed with a two-run double.
