PREP WRESTLING/BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Snohomish’s experience trumps youth

Published 10:48 pm Thursday, December 17, 2009

SNOHOMISH — The Snohomish wrestling team came out strong and took advantage of a young Cascade team to defeat the Bruins 53-20 Thursday in a Wesco North meet at Snohomish H.S.

Cascade (0-1 league, 4-3 overall), which was competing in its first league meet of the season, started seven freshman.

The Panthers (2-0, 6-1), meanwhile, had a standout performance from a freshman of their own. Garrett Pope, at 125-pounds, pinned James Wooldridge in 5 minutes, 4 seconds to help Snohomish pull away early in the meet.

“It was big for him to get a pin,” Snohomish head coach Rob Zabel said. “(Pope’s) been working really hard.”

Zabel also pointed out the strong play from heavyweight (285-pounds) Mike Maybin, who decisioned Timothy St. Marie, 5-2.

“Maybin wrestled a really great match against St. Marie, who’s a really tough guy,” Zabel said. “Mike wrestled a really, really smart match. I was really proud of him … He stayed in position and kept moving and tried to use a lot of leverage against a guy that had quite a few pounds on him.”

Snohomish will now compete in a couple of tournaments during the holidays. Zabel thinks the tournaments will keep his team sharp, and strengthen their games before returning to conference competition.

“(The tournaments) may be an opportunity for the kids to recharge their batteries,” Zabel said. “The holiday break is an opportunity for us to make up some ground on some people.”
