PREP ROUNDUP: Darrington advances five wrestlers to regional

CONCRETE — Darrington finished fourth in the team standings at the 2B/1B sub-district wrestling meet and advanced five champions and one third-place wrestler to next Saturday’s regional meet at Tacoma Baptist H.S.

Kerry Brooks (130 pounds), Kolton Palmer (160) and Moe Hyde (285) all won their titles by pin. Jon Fenstermaker posted a 6-2 decision to take the 135-pound championship. Derek Holm received the 119-pound title by default. Keegan Nations garnered third at 130 pounds with a pin.

Girls wrestling

Sub-regional 2: At Kirkland, Casey Mather (112 pounds), Whitney Weinert (130) and Laura Charboneau (285) all finished first in their respective weight classes to lead Stanwood to the team title. Weinert and Charboneau posted pins in their finals. Mather scored an 8-2 decision. Also winning weight class championships were: JoMae Alwine (103) of Lake Stevens, Keely Caldwell (125) of Lakewood, Lauren Reining (135) of Cascade and Lupita Garcia Ruiz (171) of Mountlake Terrace.

Orcas Island 53, Darrington 44: At Eastsound, Darrington led by 10 points when center Tyler Buchanan left the Northwest 1A/2B League game early in the fourth quarter with a head injury. Buchanan had a triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 14 blocks. Without him in the game, Orcas out-scored Darrington 20-2 in the final period.
