SULTAN — A 50-year-old man was seriously injured Tuesday morning when a tree fell on his truck on Sultan Basin Road.

The incident was reported to Snohomish County Fire District 5 just after 8:30 a.m. The man was unconscious and trapped in his vehicle when medics arrived, about 7 miles from Sultan, said Jim Fulcher, deputy fire chief.

Sultan Basin Road was closed before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

After crews got the man out of his car, he was taken to the fire station in Sultan. He was picked up there by a medical helicopter to be taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Fulcher said.

When emergency responders arrived, trees fell near their cars and sent them running for safety.

Crews were waiting for high winds to calm down before they began clearing fallen trees, Fulcher said.

Wind speeds reached almost 30 mph early in the morning. They were expected to decrease by Tuesday afternoon, said Johnny Burg, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

The road was expected to remain closed until Tuesday evening, sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said.
