Superintendent leaving Lakewood schools in June

Michael Mack, superintendent of Lakewood schools since 2014, plans to retire from the district in June, but he’s not leaving education. His next stop is Saudi Arabia.

He’ll become superintendent of the International Schools Group, which operates six schools in Saudi Arabia. The schools serve students from America and the United Kingdom as well as many other countries.

To choose Mack’s successor, the Lakewood School Board will work with district staff and the community.

Mack has spent 11 years with Lakewood. Previously, he was superintendent at the International School of Latvia, and from 1999-2004 was Stanwood Middle School’s principal. In the Lake Washington School District, he was assistant principal at Kamiakin Junior High and a high school counselor.

During his tenure, the Lakewood district’s on-time graduation rate improved to 92.1 percent, up from 77.9 percent.

The district also built the new high school, which opened in September 2017.
