Late drama leads to draw between Glacier Peak, Kamiak boys

SNOHOMISH — It was another tug-of-war contest between Wesco 4A challengers Kamiak and Glacier Peak. Both teams conceded goals, but neither squad ended the night defeated — except maybe for Glacier Peak fans who believed they were robbed of a last-minute goal.

Regardless of the referee’s offside decision in the final moments of regulation, the Grizzlies came back twice in their game against Kamiak, drawing 2-2 in a Wesco 4A matchup.

“It’s a Monday game, so those are tough,” Glacier Peak coach Dante Casagrande said. “We looked like we had been on vacation, and it took us a half to kind of get our feet under us. … We were able to put pressure on them in the second half. … There were some things we wanted to do tonight we didn’t, but it’s probably because they’re a good team too. … (But) I was happy with everything we did. We played a nice game.”

Roman Bogutskyi and Kaloyan Iliev scored goals for Kamiak (4-1-3 overall, 0-0-1 league). Nicholas Miller and Tyler Larsen replied for Glacier Peak (5-0-2, 1-0-1).

The game was tied 1-1 late when a flurry of activity happened that could have seen either team win.

In the 78th minute Iliev, who nearly gave Kamiak the lead a minute earlier when he rocketed a volley over the crossbar, put a shot into the bottom-left corner, giving the Knights a 2-1 lead that appeared to have won it.

But Glacier Peak did not feel like losing. Shortly after the Grizzlies earned a corner and the ball was distributed to Larsen, who sent a right-footed shot through traffic and into the bottom-left corner to tie it at 2-2.

There was still enough time for some final drama as a minute later Glacier Peak had another corner kick that fell to Larsen, and he again put the ball into the net, only for the goal to be disallowed for offsides.

After a two scoreless five-minute overtime periods the teams settled for a draw.

“We get to see (Glacier Peak) again because I don’t think they saw our best,” Kamiak coach Kosta Pitharoulis said. “We weren’t really clicking early on, so hopefully we get to play them on a Wednesday where we get to practice beforehand. But I think when it comes to the league overall it’s going to be a battle, 4A is always tough in Wesco.”

After a scoreless first half Kamiak struck first four minutes in. The Knights won back-to-back corner kicks, and on the second one Bogutskyi headed Caleb Peter’s cross into the bottom-right corner to open the scoring.

Glacier Peak got its first tying goal at approximately the 50-minute mark. Miller found space behind Kamiak’s defense and slotted his shot into the bottom-right corner to make it 1-1.
