EVERETT — Snohomish County received $1.1 million in grant funds that will pay for a roundabout at a south Everett intersection and the study of a I-5 crossover for the Interurban Trail, the county’s public works department announced Friday.
Just over $900,000 will go toward a new roundabout at the intersection of 4th Ave. W and 132nd St. SW, which will also include flashing beacons for safer pedestrian crossings. Research has shown that roundabouts are safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists compared to two-way stops or traffic signals, especially if the roundabout is limited to a single lane. They also improve traffic flow and reduce delays.
The roundabout will be built with recycled plastic and is designed to be a road safety improvement for about 15 years until more significant changes are made when a planned light rail station is built in the area, the public works department wrote Friday.
Another $250,000 will go toward studying plans for the Interurban Trail to cross over 1-5 at Maple Road in south Snohomish County, near Lynnwood. That project will study a proposed bicycle and pedestrian crossing over I-5, possible new trail facilities, and the feasibility of a new trail path through a Snohomish Public Utilities Department corridor.
