The Seattle Storm announced on Monday that they have signed former No. 1 overall draft pick Ann Wauters to a contract.

Wauters is currently playing in EuroLeague with Storm forward/center Lauren Jackson and head coach and general manager of the Storm Brian Agler returned from Europe on Sunday after signing Wauters to a contract.

“We targeted her and we felt like she was very key to how we’re going to build our team in the future,” Agler said in a press release. “I’ve always had high regard for Ann, not only her ability to play —she’s one of the better post players in the world — but also just the quality of person she is.”

The 31-year-old Wauters last played in the WNBA in the 2009 season before taking the last two seasons off. Wauters was originally drafted by the Cleveland Rockers, who are no longer a part of the league, in 2000 and has also played for New York and San Antonio in her seven-year career.

Wauters is averaging 14.9 points and eight rebounds for Ros Casares Valencia this season.

“I’ve always loved Seattle as a city,” Wauters said. “To be able to play on such an incredible team in front of such loyal fans is a real privilege.”
