CHENEY – South Whidbey’s Travis Tornga edged Lakewood’s Adam Togstad for the javelin championship in the 2A boys track state meet Friday at Eastern Washington University.

Tornga threw 172 feet, 1 inch to Togstad’s 170-2.

“It feels really good winning the state championship,” Tornga said, “beause last year I got second place behind Adam Togstad. He threw a 170 on his last throw to move ahead of me, so I tried to stay relaxed, and thought to myself ‘I was not going to lose to him again.’ Then on my last throw I heard 172-10.”

South Whidbey’s Kyle McGillen won the triple jump with a leap of 44-9.75.

“I had to work at it this year since I won it last year,” McGillen said. “It feels pretty good winning the state championship. The team is doing good.”

Mike Torie (50-5.75) of Lakewood finished second to Dustin Knight (52-1) of Meridian in the shot put. Sultan’s Nathaniel Nielsen (50-1.5) was third.

“On Mike’s last throw he muscled it out there and finished in second place,” Lakewood coach Mike Evans said. “He was ninth before that throw.

“It was a good year for our district and pretty tough year.”

Evan Johnson of South Whidbey placed seventh in the 400 in 52.76 seconds.
