EVERETT — City staff have delayed the building of a small skate park in south Everett’s Lions Park to seek additional grant funding for the project.
Known as a ‘skate dot,’ the new infrastructure is set to serve as a mini skate park, with a small half pipe, quarter pipe, grinding curbs and a dedicated skate sidewalk. The project is currently in the early planning stages.
In 2024, the Snohomish County Council provided $80,000 to the city to help pay for the park improvements, but the agreement had a deadline of Dec. 31, 2025.
On Wednesday, the City Council amended the agreement with the county, giving the city until the end of 2026 to use the funds, citing procurement delays and design challenges, a council document read.
Everett applied for additional grant funding from the state to help pay for the project, a process which slightly delayed it, city parks manager Cory Rettenmier wrote in an email Friday.
The park is an “ideal location” to build the new skate feature, a council document read, citing feedback from the Beverly Park-Cascade View neighborhood, the local Boys and Girls Club and the Everett Police Department. Extending the agreement will allow more time for design, community engagement and construction, it read.
Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin announced the new skate amenities during her State of the City address in March. The city is expected to complete a final design for the small skate park this fall and plans to open it in summer 2026, parks staff said.
Everett currently has two skate parks in the city, one at Wiggums Hollow Park in northeast Everett and another at Walter E. Hall Park on Casino Road.
