After listening to a talk about local geology from an expert in the field, fourth- and fifth-grade students from Twin City Elementary School in Stanwood hiked along the scenic bluff trail at Ebey’s Landing on central Whidbey Island on June 6.

Cheryl Anderton’s class spent three days and two nights on Whidbey as part of a hands-on learning experience to better understand geology.

Grant Heiken, a board member with the Whidbey Camano Land Trust, spoke to the students about the subject. Heiken is an author and retired geologist who once worked for NASA during the Apollo Program and was a researcher at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico.
