EVERETT — Overnight lane closures and eventually a total freeway detour are set for northbound I-5 through Everett this weekend.

Crews contracted by the Washington State Department of Transportation are working to replace a girder on the 12th Street NE bridge over I-5. In September 2021, a northbound semi-truck driver was hauling an excavator that was too tall and hit the girder that supports the bridge deck.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared an emergency to secure quick funding to repair the estimated $1. 8 million damage..

All lanes are scheduled to close at 11 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday and 11 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday. A detour will take drivers to Marine View Drive and Highway 529.

Weather could delay the work.
