We’re launching a health reporting initiative

You can help direct our coverage.

The Daily Herald is launching a new journalism initiative to report on the health and wellness of our community, and we’d like you, our readers, to help shape the work we do.

Over the past year, we heard from readers, community leaders, and those who completed our Listening Survey that some of the most pressing health and wellness challenges facing our community include health equity, mental and behavioral health, rural health care, social and family issues, homelessness and substance abuse.

We know that legislation, medical trends and advances, and the lingering affects of the COVID-19 pandemic all impact these and other health-related issues. We hope to explore these topics and more through our Health Reporting Initiative, which will be driven by a dedicated health reporter in collaboration with our other Herald reporters.

The Health Reporting Initiative is funded in part for three years by Premera Blue Cross, a not-for-profit, independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association based in Mountlake Terrace and a leading health plan in the Pacific Northwest. The Herald hopes to add additional sponsors to support and sustain the Health Reporting Initiative.

Please tell us what you’d like to learn from our coverage through the Health Reporting Initiative and if you have tips or story ideas to share. Send an email to supportlocaljournalism@heraldnet.com or leave a voicemail with your thoughts at 425-339-3452. Be sure to provide your name and contact information so we can reach out to you for more information.

The Health Reporting Initiative is a community journalism project covering health and wellness issues in Snohomish County. It is funded in part through a sponsorship from Premera Blue Cross. The Daily Herald maintains editorial control over content produced through this initiative. If you are interested in meeting our community’s need for more health and wellness reporting by supporting the Health Reporting Initiative, contact Journalism Development Director Brenda Mann Harrison at brenda.harrison@heraldnet.com
