Camp Fire offers vital support, skill-building and fun, outdoor experiences
For generations, summer camp has been a cherished tradition for many youth. But for Camp Fire Snohomish County, the mission extends beyond typical outdoor activities.
This non-profit organization offers a vital network of support, connection and growth for the younger community, striving to give “kids the opportunity to connect to the outdoors, themselves and others.”
This mission transforms the camp experience from a simple summer getaway into a journey where children and youth can build personal development and practical skills.
Operating on a 185-acre forest, wetland and waterfront site in Snohomish County, Camp Killoqua serves children from kindergarten through high school with a diverse range of day and overnight camps.
“Camp Fire is more than just a place to send your kids. We offer essential community support, scholarship opportunities and unique outdoor experiences,” says Jeremy Gregersen, Camp Fire Snohomish County Executive Director.
In addition to traditional camp activities like archery, hiking and boating, Camp Kiloqua operates specialty programs that address critical community needs:
- The Inclusion Camp provides a supportive environment for youth with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, ensuring all children have a chance to explore and learn new skills.
- Camp Willie offers a safe space for grief support and counseling for kids who’ve lost a parent or a close loved one. This camp is staffed by both traditional outdoor counselors and volunteers, and joined by professional grief counselors and psychologists.
“Our camps allow the kids to get away from their screens, spend time outdoors in a place where they are truly supported,” Gregersen says. “Giving kids a scheduled time to play outside helps build structure and routine and gives them time to connect with their peers and mentors.”
Beyond the summer months, Camp Fire Snohomish County utilizes its facilities for Outdoor Education for school groups and dedicated Leadership Programs for youth organizations.
These retreats focus on teamwork, communication and critical thinking, helping students build practical life skills within a small-group setting.
