By the end of this year, golfers who play Marysville’s Cedarcrest Golf Course will be able to stop in for a hot meal or a cool beverage after their rounds.

Construction has begun on a new pro shop at venerable Cedarcrest, and the existing pro shop will then be remodeled into a new restaurant. According to Jim Ballew, Marysville’s parks and recreation director, the new pro shop should be done by the end of October and the new restaurant by mid-December.

The course has been without a restaurant since reopening after a major reconstruction in August of 1997, and that absence has been an ongoing frustration for regular Cedarcrest customers.

“If a golf course doesn’t have a restaurant, it’s hard to be a golf course,” said Rob Lindsey, Cedarcrest’s general manager. “The men’s and ladies’ clubs want a place where they can get something to eat and a beer after they play golf. It’s also a huge part of corporate tournaments.

” (A restaurant) is the one thing I’ve pushed hard for since I’ve been here,” said Lindsey, who replaced longtime Cedarcrest head pro Don Shaw on Feb. 1.

The $785,000 construction project began in mid-July, and crews were pouring concrete slabs for the new pro shop and remodeled restaurant on Wednesday.

The new facilities should enhance what has already been a prosperous season, Ballew said. Cedarcrest is on a pace to do approximately 55,000 rounds this year, which is about 11,000 more rounds than a year ago and within striking distance of the Cedarcrest record of around 62,000, he said.

“Rob Lindsey and his staff are doing a great job of attracting new golfers, particularly through the youth league and women’s programs,” Ballew said. And once the new pro shop and restaurant are complete, “we expect to do even better,” he added. “We should start denting some records in the near future.”

Fanning, who earned $908, had rounds of 72, 70 and 76 for a 218 total, finishing 11 strokes behind winner Steve Stull.
