Eight-year-old Sydney Taggart advanced to the state Elks Hoop Shoot free-throw contest after winning her age group at a district event held Jan. 27 at Washington Elementary School in Mount Vernon.

Taggart, who advanced to the district event with five other youths after winning her category at the Everett Elks Hoop Shoot on Jan. 15 at Everett High School, made 16 of her 25 free throw attempts in winning the 8-9-year-old girls division.

Joining Taggart at the district contest after winning their divisions locally were: Tyler Bang, who finished third in 8-9 boys; Ruby Mensing, who finished second in 10-11 girls; Jessy Benthin, who finished second in 10-11 boys; Peyton Spencer, who finished second in 12-13 girls; and Josh Kenworthy, who finished third in 12-13 boys.

Each contestant in the local and district events was given unlimited time to attempt 25 free throws. There were three age groups with girls and boys competing separately. The 8-9 divisions shot from 4 feet inside the free-throw line, while the 10-11 and 12-13 divisions lined up at the standard free-throw line.

The state event will be held Feb. 11 in Bellevue, with the winners in each category advancing to Nationals in April in Massachusetts.

Marsh earns NWC men’s basketball weekly honor: University of Puget Sound junior guard Taylor Marsh, a Meadowdale High School alum, was named the Northwest Conference men’s basketball player of the week for the week ending Jan. 15.

Football

Eneberg selected EWU’s defensive player of the year: Eastern Washington senior linebacker and team co-captain David Eneberg was selected as the team’s Defensive Player of the Year at the school’s annual Football Awards Banquet on Jan. 13.

Eneberg, a Kamiak High School alum, was also recognized at the banquet for earning honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference honors for a second straight year.

Eneberg, who missed the final two games of the season with a shoulder injury, finished second on the team with 64 tackles. His 42-game total of 208 tackles put him 20th on Eastern Washington’s career tackles list.

Cross country

Miller named to conference all-academic team: University of San Francisco junior Lucy Miller, a Snohomish High School alum, was selected to the 2006 West Coast Fall All-Academic women’s cross country team.

Miller, who was also a 2006 All-West Coast Conference First Team selection after earning an honorable mention last year, maintained a 3.37 grade point average while majoring in Marketing.

Miller finished seventh overall, second on her team, to help lift the Dons to a second-place finish at the WCC Cross Country Championships in October 2006.

To be considered for selection to the WCC all-academic team, scholar-athletes must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average while also being a significant contributor to his or her team.
