Lucy Miller, Bryce Barker

If high school girls soccer were played in the spring, you can bet Miller would be found on the field rather than running around it.

Because soccer is played in the fall, Miller spends her springs as a distance runner. She’s good a booting a ball around, but no Snohomish County girl has been better than Miller at running laps on a track. Miller, a junior, picked up the fifth and sixth district titles of her career Wednesday and Friday at the Northwest District track meet. She’s won the district 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in each of her three seasons.

Wednesday, Miller covered 2 miles in 11 minutes, 10.74 seconds to finish just ahead of teammate Ashley Meyer. In the mile on Friday, Miller trailed Shorewood’s Tiffany Passi by more than five yards with 200 remaining, but used her strong kick to beat Passi by five yards.

Her time of 5:10:07 was among the state’s best performances this season, as was her finish in Wednesday’s 3,200.

Miller said she hopes to improve on her state performances in the mile this weekend in Pasco. Miller finished fourth in 2001 and eighth in 2002. She was second and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200.

“I want to do well in the mile,” Miller said. “I really like that one, but the 2-mile is probably my stronger event.”

Other top girls track performances: Emily Kling, Snohomish; Amber Nash, Lakewood; Whitney Hooks, Cascade; Cori Moore, Everett; Claudia Gil-Osorio, South Whidbey; Courtney Waterhouse, Snohomish; Carly Osness, Snohomish; Teri VanLandingham, Snohomish; Kendra Monroe, Stanwood.

Stevenson and Klahowya did everything they could to slow Bryce Barker in Lakewood’s Class 2A state playoff games last week, but Barker still ate them up.

The senior forward scored seven of Lakewood’s eight goals to lead the Cougars to this weekend’s state semifinals.

Both teams knew Barker was a scoring machine. Both rode busses home dumbfounded.

Barker scored all five of Lakewood’s goals in Tuesday’s 5-1 victory over Stevenson. Saturday, despite constant double teams from Klahowya, Barker scored twice in a 3-1 triumph.

“He is such a dominating player and so explosive,” said Lakewood coach Steve Hofmann after the game.

Barker’s magnificent seven lifted his season total to 45 goals, which ties him for the most in the state in any classification. Barker, Lakewood’s season and career scoring leader, has more goals this season than any other Lakewood player has recorded in a career.
