The Seattle Mariners couldn’t contain the Philadelphia Phillies’ offense in the first game of their series on Monday night, losing 12-7. A six-run second inning had Philadelphia playing from ahead for almost the entire contest, as the Phillies slugged four homers on the day. The loss dropped second-place Seattle to 68-58 as it continues to chase the AL West-leading Houston Astros.
It was a loss for M’s starter Logan Gilbert (3-5), who only made it through the second inning before being replaced after giving up nine hits and six earned runs. In all, Philadelphia’s offense went a blazing 21-for-46 as Bryce Harper hit two homers for three RBI while Trea Turner notched four hits for five RBI to put him over 1,500 hits in his career.
Seattle’s offense didn’t have its best day early on, going a decent 9-for-36 on the game, but closed the contest with seven runs in the final three frames after being held scoreless for the first six. The MLB’s home-run leader, catcher Cal Raleigh, went 0-for-5, and left fielder Randy Arozarena went 0-for-4. Mitch Garver (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Cole Young (1-for-4, 4 RBI), on the other hand, each hit homers in that final stretch to headline the Mariners’ comeback effort. Garver’s 404-foot shot to center made it 7-1 in the top of the seventh, while Young’s 389-foot hit to right field later in the frame made it 7-4 as Seattle looked like it had a chance to pull off the improbable.
But four Philadelphia runs in the bottom of the inning put a swift end to those chances as Seattle cycled through four pitchers.
J.P. Crawford (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Julio Rodriguez (2-for-4) each doubled on the day.
