Snohomish tops Stanwood in battle of unbeatens in boys tennis

SNOHOMISH – Snohomish knocked Stanwood from the undefeated ranks on Wednesday with a 5-2 victory in a Western Confernce Northern Division boy’s tennis showdown.

Snohomish improved to 3-0, while Stanwood dropped to 3-1.

Snohomish won three consecutive matches after Stanwood’s Mike Carlson defeated Tyler Christensen 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match.

Freshman Zach Gordon ignited the Snohomish rally by outlasting Stanwood’s Jon Beutler, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

“We’ve won a pretty big squirmish in our victory,” Snohomish coach Dick Jansen said. “But we haven’t won the war.”

Loren Brokaw and Jesse Jones led Stanwood to its only doubles match victory, defeating Kelly Elms and Micah Perron in three sets. The Panthers went on to win two consecutive doubles matches to secure the team’s victory.

Shorewood 4, Edmonds-Woodway 3: The Thunderbirds captured the first two singles and doubles matches to win the battle of unbeatens in a Wesco Southern Division boy’s tennis meet that took nearly five hours to complete.

Everett 6, Lynnwood 1: Joe Thompson accounted for Lynnwood’s lone victory, downing Everett’s Kirk Nielsen in singles play in the Wesco South meet.

Stanwood 3, Jackson 1: Stanwood (2-0 overall) served 77-for-79 to take the 15-13, 15-1, 11-15, 15-4 non-conference victory. Lindsey Signer had 10 kills for Stanwood as Katie Eshelman had 12 assists for Jackson (1-1).

Darrington 3, Archbishop Murphy 0: Junior setter Becky Nations had 15 assists and was 12-12 serving as the Loggers (1-3) beat Archbishop Murphy 15-2, 15-7, 15-4 in a volleyball match Tuesday night. Natalie Haywood added two aces on 9-for-9 serving for Darrington.

Mountlake Terrace 3, Lake Stevens 1: Mountlake Terrace, led by the 33-for-33 serving of Eun Oh defeated Lake Stevens 15-9, 11-15, 15-4, 15-8. The Hawks, 2-1 on the season, were also led by the 14 kills of Rachel Galbraith and 6 blocks and 12 kills of Kelsey Votemann. Lake Stevens, with 42 assists by Erin Sherard and strong serving by Gina Carbonato remains winless with an 0-2 season mark..

Cascade 3, Lynnwood 0: Luann Anderson led the Bruins with 12 kills, while teammate Alyssa Smoke dished out 28 assists as the Bruins defeated the Royals 15-3, 15-10, 15-9 in a non-conference match Wednesday. Jenna Houston led the Royals with 10 kills. Cascade improved to 2-0 overall. the winless Royals dropped to 0-2 overall.

Meadowdale 3, Arlington 0: Mira Dermendjieva and Sara Castillo combined for 29 assists to lead Meadowdale 15-9, 15-4, 16-14 in a non conference meet. Jennie Swerk and Melissa Frifk combined for 15 kills for Meadowdale as Percilla Bernaola had 15 digs for Arlington.

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Monroe 0: Morgan Harter had 15 kills and teammate Brittany Cooper had six kills and 11 digs to lead Edmonds-Woodway (1-1 overall) 17-15, 15-12, 15-8 in a non-conference meet. Katie Havich had 24 assists and Taylor Thompson served six aces for Monroe (0-2).
