Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for Jan. 23-29

The Athlete of the Week nominees for Jan. 23-29. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s edition of The Herald.

Keaton Mayernik | Stanwood | Boys Wrestling

Mayernik, a senior, won the 132-pound title at the Lynden Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 21. He picked up three pins before beating Lynden’s Connor Holgate, a 2022 2A state qualifier at 138 pounds, by a 20-5 major decision in the title bout. Mayernik won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Jan. 16-22 by claiming 1,234 (35.5%) of 3,473 votes.

This week’s nominees

Tsuyoshi Kameda | Kamiak | Boys Swim & Dive

Kameda, a senior, picked up a pair of individual victories twice while helping the Knights to a 2-0 week. He won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 56.72 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (55.35 seconds) against Edmonds-Woodway on Jan. 24. He also won the 50 freestyle (25.26 seconds) and 100 butterfly (56.18 seconds) against Mountlake Terrace on Jan. 26. Kameda was a member of two victorious relay squads at each meet.

Trevor Laymance | Granite Falls | Boys Wrestling

Laymance, a sophomore, earned a 7-6 decision of South Whidbey’s Cole Thorsen, ranked fifth in Class 1A at 145 pounds by Washington Wrestling Report, to claim the 145-pound title at the Emerald Sound Conference Tournament on Jan. 28. He scored victories by pin in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Kylani Rookstool | Glacier Peak | Girls Basketball

Rookstool, a senior, posted 29 points, six rebounds and five assists in the Grizzlies’ 70-45 victory over Jackson on Jan. 26.

Lily Smith | Cedarcrest | Girls Wrestling

Smith, a junior, secured four straight pins on her way to claiming the 115-pound title at the Lady Knights Invitational on Jan. 28.

Toby Trichler | Sultan | Boys Basketball

Trichler, a junior, scored 30 points or more in three straight games to lead the Turks to a 3-0 week. He netted 32 points in Sultan’s 78-50 win over Bush on Jan. 24, 30 points in a key 67-56 victory over Eastside Prep on Jan. 26, and 31 in a 74-64 besting of Summit Sierra on Jan. 27.

Jenna Villa | Arlington | Girls Basketball

Villa, a senior, scored 19 of her team’s 21 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 29 points in the Eagles’ 58-50 win over rival Stanwood on Jan. 25. She also scored a game-high 29 points as Arlington beat Everett 61-50 on Jan. 27. Villa connected on five 3-pointers in each contest.

David Zachman | Arlington | Boys Basketball

Zachman, a senior, poured in 36 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Eagles’ 69-49 victory over rival Stanwood on Jan. 24.
