Wednesday’s district softball roundup: Lake Stevens-Jackson in 4A final

EVERETT — In a tie game in the bottom of the fifth, Vikings catcher Payton Beaver came through with a clutch two-out single that gave Lake Stevens (20-1) and pitcher Sara Johnson all they needed for a 3-1 victory Wednesday over the Grizzlies in a 4A District 1 semifinal game.

“(Beaver) was frustrated with her first two at-bats, and for her to step up in that situation says a lot about the kind of leader she is,” Lake Stevens coach Sarah Hirsch said.

The Vikings move on to the district championship game where they will face will face Jackson, a team they’ve beat twice in their two regular season meetings, Thursday at 7 p.m.

Glacier Peak (11-10) faces Mount Vernon in a loser-out game Thursday at 4 p.m.

Jackson 5, Monroe 0

EVERETT — Iyanla Pennington struck out eight in a three-hit shutout as the Timberwolves advanced to the 4A District 1 championship game with the win over the Bearcats.

Jackson coach Kyle Peacocke said Pennington’s changeup was working well Wednesday, and its effectiveness coupled with her usual velocity was a tough mix for Monroe’s hitters.

“She was really incredible tonight,” Peacocke said. “The changeup is a pitch she’s struggled with a little bit, but she throws so hard that when she’s throwing it well it makes her really tough.”

Taylor Adams went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple and Sam Mutolo went 3-for-4 with an RBI double for the Timberwolves (18-3), who split their regular-season meetings with Monroe (16-4).

Morgan Allen had two doubles for Monroe, which will face Kamiak in an elimination game Thursday.

Jackson will be in search of its first win against Lake Stevens in Thursday’s championship game, with a state berth on the line.

Jackson 12, Mount Vernon 2 (5)

EVERETT — The Timberwolves scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back in Wednesday’s district win over the Bulldogs.

Mount Vernon will face Glacier Peak in an elimination game on Thursday.

Glacier Peak 8, Kamiak 4

EVERETT — Ashley Jacobson and Kendall Curtis drove in two runs apiece to help the Grizzlies past the Knights in a first-round game

3A District 1 Tournament

Marysville Pilchuck 20, Lynnwood 2

EVERETT — McKenzie Justice and Lauren Lewis each drove in five runs to lead the Tomahawks (15-7) past the Royals in a 3A District 1 tournament game on Wednesday.

Marysville Pilchuck advances to a semifinal game against Meadowdale Thursday at 7 p.m. The loss puts the Royals (5-17) in a loser-out game against Marysville Getchell Thursday at 4 p.m.

Meadowdale 11, Marysville Getchell 3

EVERETT — The Mavericks (16-4) handled the Chargers to advance to Thursday’s semifinals, where they’ll face Marysville Pilchuck with a state berth on the line.

Marysville Getchell (10-10) will tangle with Lynnwood in an elimination game Thursday.

Everett 7, Edmonds-Woodway 5

EVERETT — Megan Gordon homered, and Andrea Hedington went the distance in the circle and drove in two runs at the plate to lift the Seagulls (14-7) over the Warriors in a 3A District 1 tournament game Wednesday.

Everett advances to face Snohomish, who went undefeated in conference play, Thursday at 7 p.m. The Warriors (12-9) will play Shorecrest in a loser-out game Thursday at 4 p.m.

Snohomish 16, Shorecrest 0

EVERETT — The Panthers (20-1) overwhelmed the Scots to advance to Thursday’s semifinals, where they’ll face Everett with a state berth at stake.

Shorecrest (7-15) will battle Edmonds-Woodway in an elimination game.
