The program is co-sponsored by Seattle Central and North Seattle community colleges and the Shoreline Library. It is scheduled from 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 9, at the Shoreline Library, 345 NE 175th St.

Massage with a cause

The Shoreline Massage Envy is teaming up with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to host Massage for the Cure on Sept. 15.

During the one-day event, the massage clinic will offer $35 one-hour therapeutic sessions, with $10 from each massage being donated to the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to support breast cancer education, research, screening and treatment initiatives.

Since the first Massage for the Cure event in 2005, Massage Envy has raised more than $800,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This year, Massage Envy’s goal is to raise $500,000, with an estimated 590 Massage Envy clinics in 40 states participating.

To make an appointment for Massage for the Cure, stop by the Shoreline Massage Envy clinic at 20124 Ballinger Way, call 206-366-1111 or visit www.massageenvy.com.

Help foster kids go back to school

When customers buy and donate a backpack at a TOP Food &Drug store for $9.99 through Sept. 13, the grocer will fill the backpack with $21 worth of school supplies, including paper, pencils, crayons, a binder and a ruler.

The filled backpacks will then be distributed to foster children by Treehouse for Kids.

Since 1988, Treehouse has filled the gaps for children in foster care.

Bellingham-based Haggen Inc. operates 33 supermarkets under the TOP Food &Drug and Haggen Food &Pharmacy names. For locations, visit www.top-foods.com.

Power Of One seeks recruits

The Power of One Senior Volunteers program is now recruiting for the new school year.

Sponsored by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, Power of One matches volunteers 55 years and older with schools in the Shoreline School District. Volunteers give their time in a variety of ways, including tutoring, mentoring and helping in classrooms and libraries.

The time commitment is flexible; volunteers can choose the school and assignment. Training and support are provided. Needs range from working with early childhood education (2- to 3-year-olds) to high school students.

For more information about registration, contact volunteer coordinator Karen Kessinger at 206-365-1169 or karen.kessinger@shorelineschools.org. Power of One Senior Volunteers must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check.

The program started in 1996 and is a partnership of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center and the Shoreline School District. During the 2008-09 school year, a core of about 58 Power of One volunteers put in nearly 4,000 hours at Shoreline schools and programs.

Golf outing for cancer research

The Pink Polka Dots Guild will hold its third annual Sydney Coxon Memorial golf tournament and silent auction/dinner Sept. 12 at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett.

The event is open to the public and direct donations are also welcome to help in the fight against brain cancers. The cost is $125 for golfing and the buffet dinner, or $60 for just dinner. Both options include the auction and raffle drawings in the evening.

Participants can register online at www.in-tec.com/golf.

Sponsored by Integrated Technologies Inc., all proceeds from the event support brain tumor research at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The Pink Polka Dots Guild was founded by three now-teenaged classmates in memory of their friend, Sydney Coxon, who died at age 11 of a brain tumor. As a Seattle Children’s Hospital Junior Guild, the majority of members are teens or younger.
