New web cams on I-5 from Everett to Arlington

The state this week finished installing and activating traffic web cameras on I-5 between Everett and Arlington, filling in the only remaining gap in the state’s web cam system. between Arlington and Tacoma.

Drivers now can look on the web and see views of I-5 throughout that entire stretch, while before there were no camera views of the area from Everett to Arlington.

The state also has finished installing loops in the road between Everett and Marysville, meaning that color-coded maps on the state’s website show if there’s congestion there. As with the cameras, there previously were no loops so there was no information, with that stretch of I-5 on the map turning up gray.

Six new cameras were installed on the stretch between Everett and Marysville starting in the fall, said Bronlea Mishler, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation. Twelve other cameras recently installed on I-5 between Marysville and Arlington along with the new concrete center barrier can now be activated because of the addition of new fiber optic lines during the project, Mishler said.

Loops were earlier installed in the highway between Marysville and Arlington during the barrier project and have been working.

The $1.1 million for the new electronics is part of a $3.2 million overall project that included repaving the southbound lanes of I-5 between Marysville and Everett late last summer.
