Birds and students: Two groups of students involved in local environmental projects will speak at 7 p.m. March 11 at the Pilchuck Audubon Society’s monthly meeting at Everett Firefighters’ Hall, 2411 Hewitt Ave. Second and third graders from Arlington worked to restore a wetland near their school and learned about the birds that live there. Students Saving Salmon club from Edmonds Woodway High School is doing water-quality monitoring as part of a plan to daylight Willow Creek.

Safari: Dan Hopkins of Grass Trak Safaris will share stories of his travels throughout Botswana at 7 p.m. March 11 at Skip Rock Distillers, 104 Ave. C, Suite A, Snohomish. He will speak about the wildlife, landscapes and conservation efforts in Botswana.

GPS: Learn about GPS for boating at a free seminar by the Everett Sail and Power Squadron at 2 p.m. March 12 at the Tulalip Cabela’s. The seminar will explain principles of waypoint navigation and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Learn how to store waypoints, activate them for navigation and use GPS to keep you on a safe course. For information, contact Jim West at phnx789@msn.com.

Boating: A 7-week boating course, offered by the Everett Sail and Power Squadron, begins April 11 at the Port of Everett, Everett Yacht Club Building, 404 14th Street. The course covers fundamentals of safe boating. Upon successful completion of the final test, students qualify for the Washington State Boater Education card required before operating watercraft in Washington. $50 non-members / $35 members. Trail skills: Learn trail maintenance skills, from basics to advanced, at the Pacific Crest Trail Association’s North Cascades Trail Skills College, April 30 to May 1 in Concrete. The classes are free and meals are provided, although the PCTA requests that students volunteer at least 24 hours on trail projects in the coming year. Whales: Welcome the return of the gray whales on April 16 and 17 in Langley on Whidbey Island. The event includes educational displays, costume making, children’s activities and a parade on Saturday. A cruise to see the gray whales is on Sunday afternoon. Get details at www.orcanetwork.org.
