WHAT: This crocosmia called Lucifer is also referred to as montbretia. It features brilliant red flowers that bloom at the top of lancelike leaves.
Planted in clumps of 10 or 12, it is a feature in many Northwest gardens and is also grown worldwide.
It’s native to South Africa and there are hundreds of cultivars, but Lucifer has long had the attention of local gardeners who desire both the bright color and longevity of the bloom.
Flowers begin to appear in early July and are typically still present in late September. The flowers attract butterflies and honey bees and are considered a fine choice for bouquets.
Lucifer received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit in 1993 from the Royal Horticultural Society in England.
SUN OR SHADE: Crocosmia prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade.
SIZE: 2 to 3 feet is the typical height. The width will depend upon how many corms are planted together to create a display.
