In tune: Involved in school’s jazz and chamber choirs. Jazz choir meets at 6 a.m. “I don’t consider myself a morning person at all (but) … singing is just my passion. It is what I love to do.”
Double rehearsals: Was in two musicals, “Guys and Dolls” and “Kiss Me, Kate,” at the same time last year through school and church.
Bum wheel: Cross-country season ended early after a foot injury left her on crutches. The co-captain still shows up to practice and meets to encourage her teammates.
Overcoming obstacles: Was born with a rare eye disorder. One eye was removed and replaced with a prosthetic eye at an early age; the other is, at times, subject to blood on the retina, which causes blurry vision “like seeing through white balloons.” It has taught perseverance as she has had to catch up on school work when she loses vision and gets medical treatment.
Not complaining: Vision is 20-70 corrected. “It could be so much worse. I’m very lucky to still have vision. I can see the world and that’s’ all I need. … This is the view of the world God wanted me to have.”
“I have always felt I want to be treated the same as everybody else. I don’t want special consideration.”
Helping others: Is vice president of school’s Key Club, which does community service work. Among other things, the club helps with local events, spends time with elderly and raises money for children with serious medical needs.
Good grades: Has maintained a 3.9 grade point average and is taking college-level advanced placement courses in English and government. Is applying to private colleges and universities on the East Coast. Could major in communications.
Glad for last year: Torn between moving on in June and enjoying her final year of school. “High school has been a whole lot of fun. I keep busy. Some people think I’m too busy. … People want to rush and grow up so fast. I’m OK here. But I’m definitely looking forward to graduation.”
