Super Kid: Ashlynn Westergreen, 18, Mariner High School senior

Easing transition: Is part of school’s M to M mentorship program, helping freshmen adjust to high school. Remembers her transition from middle school and believes M to M helps. “I was scared. You are just like this new little kid. You don’t know anything.”
Favorite subject: History. “I love learning about other people and other cultures.”
Next year: Has been accepted to a Brigham Young University campus in Rexburg, Idaho, and is considering an accounting major. “I’m really excited right now but I’m going to get homesick. I can feel it.”
Leading reading: Recently organized a Read Across America event that brought about 60 Mariner students to Challenger, Discovery and Odyssey elementary schools to promote reading among students from kindergarten through second grade. Students read Dr. Seuss books to the youngsters. She shared “The Foot Book” and “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?”
Helping out: Is taking a leadership class at Mariner and has spent summers volunteering at Camp Patterson, a camp for kids with special needs. Her knowledge of American Sign Language proved useful. Also has worked at Christmas House, which helps low-income families during the holidays.
Rewarding: “I just love volunteering. I think it’s just what I’m good at.”
Holding office: Is a senator in the Navigator learning academy at Mariner.
Big sister: Has four younger siblings and enjoys hanging out with them, playing board games and watching Disney movies. Since getting her license, she has become their “taxi service,” chauffeuring them in the family van. “My mom was really excited when I got my license.”
Diploma in sight: Can hardly wait to graduate. “I am so excited. I never thought that the last semester would come and now that it’s here, it just seems that it is dragging on forever.”
Favorite movie: Monsters Inc.
Advice to others: Work hard and get involved in high school activities.
Ultimate goal: “My life goal is to be a good mom.”
