MEETING
The Snohomish County Council has scheduled a public hearing for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to consider new sign regulations for the Clearview rural commercial zone along Highway 9, between Cathcart and Maltby. It’s set to take place in council chambers on the eighth floor of the Robert Drewel Building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.

Soap box, Langley-style
Since 1972, First Street in downtown Langley has been home to some of the speediest and wackiest racers for the Soup Box Derby. Anyone can build a racer that can make it down a hill, but this is all about ingenuity, creativity and a little bit of that Langley weirdness.
The derby begins 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Community Day in Lake Stevens
The Lake Stevens Police Department, 2211 Grade Road, is hosting a Community Day from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 29. Join them for tours, child ID cards, games, crafts and a hot dog lunch. They are also accepting donations of school supplies for students in the Lake Stevens School District.

College for adults
Register now to enroll in classes for adults at Edmonds Community College, through the Creative Retirement Institute in the arts, humanities and sciences.
Each class is about two hours long, once a week for up to a month with no tests or homework. The quarter is from Sept. 23 to Dec. 13. Go to ce.edcc.edu/cri for more information and a course list.

Genealogy help
The Sno-Isle Genealogical society meets the first Wednesday of each month, except July and Aug, at 6:30 p.m. at the LDS Family History Library, 22015 48th Ave. W., Mountlake Terrace. The research library located at 19827 Poplar Way, Heritage Park, Lynnwood, is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Citizens Academy in Lake Stevens
The Lake Stevens Police Department is hosting a Citizen’s Academy to learn about community partnerships, marine patrol, crisis intervention, crime investigations, traffic safety and other topics. It starts Sept. 5. The eight-week class has room for 20 people.

Terrace seeking artists
The Mountlake Terrace Arts Advisory Commission and Friends of the Arts are seeking paintings, prints, drawings, miniatures, calligraphy, photographs as well as 3-dimensional and artisans’ works for its 41st Annual Juried Art Show.
This year’s judges include William G. Hook for painting, prints, drawings and miniatures. Mel Curtis for photography, Michael Magrath for 3-dimensional and artisans’ works and Dewey Henderson for calligraphy.
More than $5,000 in prize money is available. Arts of the Terrace is Sept. 21 to Oct. 5. Deadline for entries is Aug. 30.
