Poetic Apothecary
Poet and performer Judith Adams will explore poetry’s restorative powers by reciting poems that help us understand grief, fear, sadness and loss at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., in Mukilteo.
Adams encourages audiences to share poems that have deeply touched their lives, and she discusses how writing poetry can be a potent medicine. The English-born poet has published four books of poetry, conducted poetry workshops, recorded several albums of her work, and published her poems in magazines and anthologies.
Edge of Amazing
Providence Institute for a Healthier Community’s fifth annual “Edge of Amazing” event will look back on key health and well-being discoveries, programs, initiatives and advancements that have helped advance and redefine how we think about and view health. Then speakers will dive deep into the current state of health in Snohomish County, and showcase initiatives that are taking place right now to move the needle on improving the health of our community.
The event will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St. SW. Cost of entry is $125.
Alternatives to Lawn
Tired of always mowing? Stop the never-ending battle against moss by discovering some alternatives from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fire Station No. 4, 5920 Glenwood Ave. This free workshop will discuss unique landscaping that is not only beautiful, but can manage some of the heavy lifting on your property like stormwater runoff.
Some topics to be explored include bog gardens, filter strips, terraces, buffers, berms, splash blocks, layered plantings and permeable pathways. Registration not required, but encouraged. Learn more by searching eventbrite.com for “Alternatives to Lawn.”
Craft show
For the 33rd year, the Starving Housewives Craft Show will be held in Bothell from Oct. 8 through 12, at 18701 120th Ave. NE.
A new craft corner will have have art supplies, vintage furniture and “lots of fun stuff at low prices.” Bring a bag of nonperishable food in exchange for a crafty gift, while supplies last.
The event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 8 p.m., except Saturday, when it ends at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
Tide explainer
Jack Hartt will explain the complex world of tides at 2 p.m. Oct. 6, in the Everett Public Library auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave in Everett.
Hartt worked for Washington State Parks for 40 years. He spent 14 years at Deception Pass State Park, where he managed over 15 miles of Puget Sound shoreline, including 10 islands.
Hartt will focus on the physical factors that create the tides and currents that are an integral part of our lives on Whidbey Island, Port Gardner Bay, the Salish Sea and the entire planet.
