EVERETT — Seattle Children’s Hospital will lay off 154 employees this fall, including positions at Seattle Children’s North Clinic in Everett.

The company faces “significant financial impacts” due to anticipated state and federal cuts, a Seattle Children’s spokesperson wrote in a statement Friday.

“As a result, we are making some difficult but necessary decisions to secure Children’s future and protect our ability to deliver compassionate care and life-saving research for the patients and families who need us,” the statement read.

In addition to Everett, the layoffs will affect employees in Seattle, Bellevue, Federal Way and Kennewick, according to a filing with the state Employment Security Department. The company will also eliminate 350 open roles.

The spokesperson declined to comment on how many positions will be eliminated in Everett.

In total, the staffing changes affect 1.5% of total employees at Seattle Children’s. The layoffs will begin Nov. 15, the state filing shows.

Seattle Children’s Hospital’s decision comes as medical providers throughout the country brace for significant federal cuts to Medicaid and Medicare. In Snohomish County, nearly 180,000 residents — about 20% of the county’s population — are enrolled in Medicaid, according to the state health care authority.

In June, Providence Swedish laid off more than 100 certified nursing assistants in Everett, citing the proposed cuts to Medicaid and Medicare at the time.

“Even though those cuts don’t take effect until late next year, hospitals, doctors, surgery centers, are beginning to plan for those cuts,” said U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Everett, in an interview Friday. “They can’t wait until next year to plan for these cuts, they have to start planning now, and that means making cuts now.”
