The chic and sculpted Lexus RX 350h is a midsize luxury SUV with five-passenger seating and a hybrid powertrain. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and has a nearly best-in-class fuel economy rating of 37 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined.
Pricing for the RX 350h is also competitive. Within the midsize luxury SUV class, its $52,775 base price represents one of the better values.
There are five trim levels to choose from: base, Premium, F Sport Design, Premium Plus, and Luxury. I drove the mid-range RX 350h F Sport Design model, $57,355.
My tester was embellished with some pricey options impacting the bottom line including a panoramic view monitor and an upgraded infotainment system with 14-inch touchscreen display and navigation.
Features specific to the F Sport Design are 21-inch wheels, F Sport exterior styling accents, a power moonroof with roof rails, NuLuxe-trimmed heated and ventilated power front seats with driver seat memory, a wood and leather-trimmed heated steering wheel, and wireless phone charger.
The RX 350h is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine along with two electric motors. All told, they generate 246 horsepower and 233 pound-feet of torque, giving the SUV a respectable liveliness quotient. Their coworker is a similarly capable continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Ride quality is smooth, quiet and comfortable, maintaining its dignity even when road surfaces are outlandish.
The RX 350h interior shouts refinement with superior design, first-rate materials, and meticulous construction. Generous amounts of headroom and legroom are provided for every seating position.
Stowage space for personal items is plentiful, including an oversized padded bin in the center console and large wide door pockets.
Rear seats have a 40/20/40 split and a reclining function. They can be folded with the touch of a button located in the cargo area. The seats don’t fold flat, but they come close enough, enlarging the variable cargo space from 29.6 cubic feet to 46.2 cubic feet. The cargo floor itself is flat and aligns with the rear bumper, making the loading and unloading of bulky items a cinch.
The RX 350h infotainment system falls a bit short of highly intuitive, but it’s far from a mess. With little effort I figured out or worked around the iffy spots. The display itself is topnotch: crisp and clear, easy to see, and great graphics.
