MARYSVILLE — Alleged vehicle prowling turned into a fatal police pursuit Friday, when a woman crashed into trees along I-5 while trying to evade officers, according to the Marysville Police Department.
Just after 2 a.m. Friday, Marysville police reportedly received reports of people trying to break into cars in the 14500 block of 51st Avenue NE.
Two or three people were suspected of the vehicle prowling and left the area in a black Cadillac Escalade, police wrote in a press release.
A Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputy found the Escalade backed into a nearby driveway. Marysville officers drove to the deputy’s location and “made contact” with the driver of the Escalade, police said.
A woman was in the front passenger seat. She slid into the driver’s seat, and drove out of the driveway, according to police.
Police said she accelerated at officers at a high rate of speed. She also drove directly into the path of another Marysville officer, who swerved out of the way to avoid a head-on crash, police wrote.
This gave police probable cause to arrest the woman for second-degree assault, authorities said.
Officers pursued the woman, who drove the Escalade southbound on I-5. The driver crossed multiple lanes at high speed, trying to exit the highway and evade police, according to police.
The Everett woman, 32, lost control of her vehicle and crashed into trees along the highway, police said.
The woman was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, where she later died.
The Washington State Patrol was conducting an independent investigation into the fatal car crash.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased.
