EVERETT – If you want to vote in the Sept. 14 primary but have not yet registered, your time is running out.

You can no longer register by mail, but must do so in person in a county elections office. The deadline is 5 p.m. Monday.

A voter must be at least 18 years old, a legal resident of Washington and a U.S. citizen.

Snohomish County has 327,614 registered voters. Island County has 40,314 registered voters.

The Snohomish County elections office is at 3000 Rockefeller Ave. in Everett. The phone number is 425-388-3472.

The Island County elections office is at 1 NE Seventh St. in Coupeville. The phone number is 360-679-7366.

League of Women Voters begins forums

EDMONDS – The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County begins its series of candidate forums in Snohomish County at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Edmonds United Methodist Church, 828 Caspers St.

The forum will be conducted in partnership with the American Association of University Women and the Methodist Church Missions.

Formal remarks begin at 7 p.m.

Candidates invited include those running for governor, U.S. Congress, representative seats in the 21st and 32nd legislative districts, state Superior Court judges and county public utility district commissioners.

People can register to at any of the meetings. Forms also are available in post offices, libraries, work settings and government offices.

The league co-sponsors free public information opportunities for voters to hear county and statewide candidates. Last year, the league moderated 11 forums in Snohomish County county.

Machinists back GOP’s Halvorson

EVERETT The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, one of the most powerful unions in the state, has endorsed Republican Kim Halvorson for the 38th Legislative District seat in the state House of Representatives.

Halvorson, of Marysville, is making her first run for public office and is seeking the seat held by Rep. John McCoy, D-Tulalip. The two will compete in the Nov. 2 general election if McCoy defeats fellow Democrat Randall Rike of Everett in the primary.

OLYMPIA Gov. Gary Locke endorsed Democratic Attorney General Christine Gregoire to be his successor on Thursday.

Locke said months ago that he had a favorite in the Sept. 14 primary race between Gregoire and King County Executive Ron Sims. The winner will face Republican Dino Rossi in the general election.

Locke, a Democrat, praised Gregoire as bright and decisive, and cited her work on environmental and social issues.

Democratic panel endorses candidates

EVERETT – The executive board of the Snohomish County Democratic Central Committee has endorsed Judge Michael Downs for Superior Court judge and Toni Olson for the Snohomish County Public Utilities District board of commissioners.

Olson’s race won’t be decided until the Nov. 2 general election. Downs will be on the primary ballot Sept. 14.

The Democratic leaders also endorsed Initiative 297, which would bar dumping of additional radioactive waste at the Hanford nuclear reservation until existing contamination is cleaned up.

Democratic forums at state fair in Monroe

MONROE – The Democratic Forum is up and running at the Evergreen State Fair, with a different political figure or organization playing host each day.

Hosting this weekend are the state 39th District Democrats Saturday, and the re-election campaign committee of U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., Sunday.
