INDEX — The search continued Monday for a Tacoma man who reportedly fell into Sunset Falls Friday and never resurfaced.
Around 9:20 p.m., a woman called to report her husband, 40, had accidentally fallen over the falls south of Index, Sky Valley Fire Chief Eric Andrews said. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue and swift water rescue team members searched the area throughout the weekend using drones but did not locate the man.
Searchers found a shoe and a pair of sweatpants Friday night that matched what the missing man was wearing, Andrews said. Searchers continued to look for the missing man Monday.
Sunset Falls is the largest of three waterfalls on the South Fork Skykomish River, according to the Northwest Waterfall Survey. The waterfall drops 104 feet into the river. The falls are not open to public access, but campgrounds and vacations spots are available near the site.
Andrews said people have become trapped in the pool below the falls in the past.
Rivers are especially dangerous right now because of melting snowpack, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Currents are swift in Snohomish County creeks and rivers and water temperatures are still very cold,” the sheriff’s office noted in a press release.
