Beating addiction is all about baby steps
Published 9:00 pm Tuesday, April 4, 2006
I found your editorial on Tuesday (“Baby steps won’t cure U.S. addiction to oil”) to be poorly thought out. As any addict can tell you, it’s all about baby steps. I suffer from a serious addiction to French fries, and let me tell you that every day I drive by without stopping in to feed, literally, my addiction is a small baby step. In what has become the norm these days, you want this solved, and you want it now. We’ve been addicted for over 50 years, so lets take a collective deep breath and relax.
What I find even more puzzling, however, is that you go on to mention the other steps being taken to break our addiction, but conclude that one little announcement isn’t enough.
If the government waited until it had a flurry of announcements, you’d complain about the lack of timely information on steps being taken. Why can’t you recognize that steps are being taken, and commend those who are doing something, anything, to solve the problem.
Your editorial contained the comment, “We’ve got to do better than that. A lot better.” I’d apply that same phrase to your recent editorials.
