Prep hot tickets: Dec.5-Dec.9

Published 1:30 am Monday, December 4, 2017

Here are four local prep events to keep an eye on this week:

1. Girls basketball: Stanwood at Lake Stevens, 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. These teams were picked to be two of the best in Snohomish County, and so far they haven’t done anything to cause people to second-guess those predictions. Both squads have posted unbeaten records against some quality competition.

2. Boys wrestling: Mariner, Marysville Getchell, Jackson at Shorecrest, 5:30 p.m. Thursday. This double-dual meet adds a twist to the opening week of the prep wrestling season, and should give fans plenty of bang for their buck. The event begins with the Timberwolves facing the Chargers and the Marauders taking on the Scots. Jackson-Shorecrest and Mariner-Marysville Getchell matches follow.

3. Girls basketball: Lynden Christian at Arlington, 7:15 p.m. Friday. It’s always intriguing to see a small school match up against a big school, but that’s routine for the traditionally dominant Lyncs, a Class 1A program that plays in the 3A/2A Northwest Conference. The Eagles plan on returning to contention this winter after a down season in 2016-17, and a good showing in this game probably would serve to validate those thoughts.

4. Boys basketball: Marysville Getchell at Marysville Pilchuck, 7 p.m. Saturday. The two rivals square off in an early-season Wesco 3A contest. RaeQuan Battle (27 points per game) and Luke Dobler (27.5) have made for a potent early-season combination for the Tomahawks. The Chargers are coming off a tough 2016-17 season (3-17), but they did win their first two games of the season last week. Freshman Malakhi Knight made a great first impression, leading Marysville Getchell with 15 points in his high school debut.
