EVERETT — After a few days of sunny blue skies, rain and snow are on the horizon as the new year kicks off in Snohomish County.

The National Weather Service is predicting light rain to begin Thursday night in the lowlands, with slightly heavier rain expected through the weekend.

“It’ll also be pretty windy. We’ll see breezy conditions on Saturday,” said National Weather Service meteorlogist Logan Howard. “In the mountains, we’ll see more significant mountain accumulation also through the weekend.”

Predictions show 5-8 inches of snow in the Stevens Pass area, Howard said.

Still working on restoring roads after historic floods earlier this month, the Washington Department of Transportation opened Highway 2 on Monday between mileposts 64-71, allowing access to Stevens Pass Ski Resort from the east side.

The agency is expecting to open the highway near Skykomish to the ski resort on Jan. 4, a Tuesday social media post stated. Due to continued construction, the road at milepost 64 will close nightly at 6 p.m.

The weekend rain will bring slightly warmer temperatures, with highs hovering just around 50 degrees Friday through Monday.

The weather service is not forecasting any river flooding in the next week, but does expect the Skykomish River to reach about action stage over the weekend.
