Donkeys’ hooves won’t scuff up gym floor

Published 10:48 pm Thursday, April 1, 2010

You ask.

We tell.

There was some confusion about a Tuesday column item for a donkey basketball game April 7 at Snohomish High School.

A company in Entiat provides donkeys for fundraisers. Students ride the donkeys around the gym and attempt to shoot baskets and beat a team of teachers also riding donkeys.

So now the big question: Do the donkeys ruin the gym floor?

Nope. The darling donkeys leave nary a mark because they wear little rubber shoes.

  • Challenge Air is a not-for-profit group that is built on the belief that every disabled person should see the world from the sky.

At a 2009 Everett Fly Day, 127 special needs children and adults participated.

This year, major sponsors have backed out.

Hoping to raise $10,000, a fundraiser is planned for 5 p.m. April 10 at Pacific Rim Supper Club and Ballroom, 3228 Marine Drive NE, Marysville.

There will be music, food and kids activities. To buy tickets, go to challengeairfundraisereverett.eventbrite.com.

Tickets will be available for $10 at the door without dinner.

There will be five bands, including country, Celtic and modern folk. The evening will open with Voices of the Village, an Arlington-based music group featuring singers of all ages and abilities.

  • Veterans in Darrington may benefit from a grant received by Catholic Community Services at the Everett Family Center.

They received a $132,350 federal grant through the Puget Sound Regional Council Coordinated Grant Program and created a handy transportation plan for veterans who live in rural and outlying areas, says Debra Bordsen, Catholic Community Services volunteer services recruiter.

The service is free and the disability does not need to be related to time in the military. Volunteer drivers will pick up veterans and transport them to medical or personal hygiene appointments.

For more information or to make a reservation for a ride, call 425-257-2101, ext. 3336, or 888-240-8572.

The grant will be spread over two years and help pay for a coordinator, recruiting volunteer drivers and for mileage reimbursements.

“By using volunteer drivers and reimbursing mileage we felt we were able to cover a much broader range of area, specifically rural areas such as Sultan and Darrington,” Bordsen says.
