PREP ROUNDUP: Glacier Peak soccer team headed to 3A state

SHORELINE — In just the second year of the soccer program at Glacier Peak High School, the Grizzlies have punched a ticket to the 3A state tournament and earned a little revenge along the way.

Glacier Peak defeated Mount Vernon 2-1 in a shootout in the second-place game of the 3A District 1 tournament Saturday at Shoreline Stadium, avenging a 4-0 loss to the Bulldogs in the semifinals and earning the district’s second and final state berth.

“It was a battle,” Grizzlies’ coach Shannon Murray said. “We made some adjustments from when we saw them on Tuesday. We were able to keep them in front of us for the most part. It was a battle and the boys played well.”

Junior goalkeeper Andrew Weakly blocked two shots in the shootout and opened the door for Robin Hryciuk to make the the game-winning kick to decide the shootout 5-4.

“On that first save you could see the energy level of our boys go up,” Murray said. “They could see they just had to make their kicks because (Weakly) was going to save another one.”

It completed an epic turnaround for a program that finished 5-9-3 overall last season, including a 1-5-3 Wesco South record in the program’s first season.

Glacier Peak (15-5 overall) struck first, with a goal in the 45th minute by Joey Cheff off an assist by Gregor Troost. The ball sailed past Luis Castro, who stood in goal for Mount Vernon, and the Grizzlies were on their way. The Bulldogs responded in the 56th minute, when Nate Barber scored an unassisted goal.

Kyle Bjornethun, Jackson Miller, Troost and Brian Holguin all made kicks for Glacier Peak in the shootout, to set up the game-winning opportunity for Hryciuk.

“To turn around and beat them today was a huge accomplishment,” Murray said. “I think (Tuesday) was a wake up call for us. We hadn’t been beaten 4-0 by anybody.”

King’s 2, Charles Wright 1: At Orting, Trevor Vartels scored in the 15th minute off a pass from Jacob Hauser and Jake Hibbard added what turned out to be the deciding goal 16 minutes later with an assist from Sam Hauck in the championship game of the 1A Bi-District tournament. King’s (14-3 overall) hosts Montesano at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the 1A state tournament.

Coupeville 2, Meridian 1 (shootout): At Bellingham, Coupeville won the shootout 3-2 to earn the No. 3 seed out of the 1A Bi-District to the 1A state tournament. On the third shootout kick, Meridian missed, giving Nathan Lamb a chance to seal the win for Coupeville. Evan Coleman stood in the goal for the first half of the game and Isaac Wacker manned the nets for the Wolves (12-8 overall) in the second half, overtime periods and shootout. Coupeville faces Overlake at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sammamish High School in the first round of the 1A state playoffs.
