Plane crash-lands in water near Edmonds; pilot uninjured

EDMONDS — A small single-engine plane crash-landed Thursday near the Edmonds waterfront.
The two-seater went down in Puget Sound just before 4:40 p.m. near the Edmonds Marina, just outside the breakwater. It sank.
The pilot was rescued by a passing boat and there were no other passengers, according to Edmonds police Sgt. Josh McClure. The pilot was not injured, he said.
“It sounds a lot more spectacular than it has become,” McClure said.
The plane was en route from Auburn to Darrington, South County Fire spokesperson Leslie Hynes said. According to firefighters, he reported he heard a “pop” and the engine lost power. The pilot tried to land on the beach, but it was too crowded. So the pilot went into the water about 200 yards off Marina Beach Park, Hynes said.
The Edmonds Police Department will be working with several partners to investigate the crash, including the National Transportation Safety Board.
Edmonds police wrote on Twitter just before 5 p.m. Thursday that there would likely be emergency personnel near the marina for a while.
As of Thursday, it was unclear when or how the plane would be recovered.
