Penn Cove Water Festival honors Coupeville’s past

Much has changed in Coupeville since the first Penn Cove Water Festival back in 1930. But the idea of combining canoe races with a chance to share native culture has remained steadfast.
This year’s Penn Cove Water Festival aims to bring back the spirit of the past with lots of activities that highlight native culture, including arts and crafts, storytelling, dance, food, children’s activities, and exhibits.
The free festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 16, with most activities centered on the Coupeville waterfront.
For a detailed list of events, see www.penncovewaterfestival.com.
Canoe races begin at the Capt. Coupe Boat Launch on Ninth Street. Performers for the festival include maritime music, flute players, violinists and dancers. The main stage for performances is in downtown Coupeville.
Also on tap starting at noon is storyteller Lou LaBombard at the museum, 908 NW Alexander St.
