SULTAN — An 84-year-old Sultan man received a serious head injury Wednesday in a crash on U.S. 2.
He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to a Washington State Patrol memo.
The crash was reported at 11:20 a.m. about four miles east of town.
The man was eastbound in a Dodge Ram that apparently crossed the center line. The Dodge collided with a westbound Chevrolet pickup. The Chevy driver, a 20-year-old Lake Stevens man, also was injured.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Later in the day, a series of crashes triggered traffic woes on northbound I-5 near Smokey Point. The Smokey Point-area crashes, at least four of them, apparently were unrelated but all occurred within the same hour or so, trooper Heather Axtman said.
None involved injuries that required a trip to the hospital, despite at least one rollover and a car that ended up stuck underneath the body of an asphalt truck, she said.
That trouble started around 1 p.m. and the highway was cleared within a couple of hours.
