EVERETT – Face it, darned few victories are going to come easily in this division.
The Shorewood Thunderbirds enjoyed a hard-fought 52-49 road victory over the Mariner Marauders in a Western Conference South Division boys basketball game Friday night.
“We did some things well,” Mariner coach Dexter Griffen said. “But, we made a few mistakes at crucial times near the end.”
In a game which was close throughout, the chief dagger came with 21 seconds remaining.
Leading by two points, Shorewood’s Sean Tracey was fouled.
He missed the front-end of the one-and-one, but the ball was tipped back to him. Quickly fouled again, he made a free throw to up the Shorewood lead to three points.
On its next possession Mariner’s Justin Cramer’s 3-point attempt, which would have tied the score, was blocked by Shorewood’s Rob Diederichs.
“Rob played well, he hit some big 3-point shots from the perimeter and made some nice assists inside,” Griffen said of Diederichs. “He did it all. Rebounding, passing and defending.”
Diederichs led Shorewood (2-0 Wesco South, 3-0 overall) with 19 points. Tracey added 10 points and Tim Diederichs contributed nine.
Aaron Cartwright led Mariner (1-1, 2-1) with 18 points, including 9-for-9 free-throw shooting. Tommy Craddock added 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for the Marauders.
“Aaron and Tommy both played very well,” Griffen said. “It’s gonna be a tough division. Nobody’s gonna skate free in this baby.”
