Steady play boosts Meadowdale

MUKILTEO – Meadowdale fell behind early, but continued to play its steady, balanced game to defeat Kamiak 47-44 Tuesday.

Combined with Mariner’s loss to Mountlake Terrace, the Mavericks (7-2 in league, 9-2 overall) moved into third place in the Wesco South.

Kamiak (5-4, 7-4) started the game strong. “We came out on fire in the first quarter and were up 15-5 at one point,” Knights assistant coach Cory West said.

In response, the Mavericks turned to 6-foot-6 center Danny Hagen, who scored a game-high 20 points. Hagen accounted for six of Meadowdale’s 10 points in the second quarter to bring his team to within one point at the half.

After a four-point second quarter, Kamiak’s offense got back on track after the intermission. The Mavericks hung with them and took a two-point lead with less than four minutes to go in the fourth quarter on a 3-point basket by Jordan McGinnis. McGinnis scored five of his 10 points in the final period.

The Knights’ Sean Hermes made one of two free throw attempts to cut the margin to one, but with less than a minute to go Meadowdale’s Demetri Huffman was fouled and he sank both shots from the stripe to seal the victory.

This was Jake Linton’s first game back for Meadowdale following a concussion suffered Jan 7.
