Matson clutch for Cascade

EVERETT – Clutch players make their reputations with final-second plays in big games.

With his Cascade boys basketball team trailing Mount Vernon by one point as the clock wound down, Mike Matson drove the lane and sank a layin with eight seconds left to lift the Bruins to a 74-73 victory Tuesday night.

The victory means Cascade (6-2 in division, 9-3 overall) and Marysville-Pilchuck – which defeated Oak Harbor – remain tied for second place in the Western Conference North Division, one game behind Snohomish, a victor over Stanwood Tuesday night.

In a game where neither team was able to build more than a single-digit lead, both Cascade and Mount Vernon (4-4, 6-6) relied on players stepping up to the challenge.

“Every time we got stuck, he came up clutch,” Cascade assistant coach Scott Stencil said of Matson, who led the Bruins with 25 points. “He made some big shots in the second half to keep us right in it.”

Mike Knight had a game-high 29 points – 21 of which came on 3-pointers – to lead Mount Vernon. Knight and Jeremy Juarez combined for 16 of Mount Vernon’s 21 points in the third quarter.

“We were up six or seven and (Knight) hit two 3s in a row inside of 30 seconds,” Stencil said. “That put them right back in it.”

Juarez finished with 18 points and Taylor Gibbons added 12 for the Bulldogs.

When Matson ran into foul trouble in the first half, Marcus Guffey stepped up for the Bruins. Guffey scored 15 of his 20 points before the intermission and he just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Senior guard Chris Hilliard had a solid all-around game for Cascade, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

“It was the kind of game you have to out-scrap the other team,” Stencil said. “Both sides played really hard.”
