Cascade wins in OT on Hilliard free throw

EVERETT – The Stanwood and Cascade boys basketball game Tuesday night came down to the final two seconds of overtime with senior Chris Hilliard (seven points) making his second free throw to move the Bruins past the Spartans 77-76 in the Western Conference North game.

Cascade led the game throughout the first three quarters and with three minutes to go in the fourth, Stanwood pulled a head by one. But, with two seconds to go, senior guard Mike Matson (21 points) hit a baseline jumper to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

“Matson has been clutch for us all year, I wasn’t surprised he made the shot,” Cascade assistant coach Scott Stencil said.

Marcus Guffey had a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bruins. Teammate Sean Carter added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Aaron Boehme for Stanwood helped keep the Spartans in the game, scoring nine of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.

“He made huge shots for them,” Stencil said.

The Bruins have won eight straight games and went undefeated at home in the regular season. They will host a 4A district playoff game next Wednesday.
