A buzzer-beater extended the Meadowdale Mavericks boys basketball team’s hopes for a final playoff berth.
Senior Robel Kidanu hit a 30-foot 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to lead the Mavericks to a 45-42 loser-out Class 4A District 1 Tournament victory over Stanwood Saturday at Jackson High School.
The Mavericks have to win two more games to claim the final playoff berth from District 1 with the first foe being Edmonds-Woodway at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson.
The Warriors have defeated Meadowdale in both regular season meetings, the last of which by two points.
Stanwood’s Gambill tied the score with two free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining. Meadowdale’s Caleb Law sprinted down the floor and passed to Kidanu on the right wing, who hit the biggest shot of his career.
“Mentally I was getting ready for overtime,” Meadowdale coach Chad McGuire said of the last play. “I didn’t get to see it go in, but I could tell by the crowd’s reaction that he had hit it.”
Stanwood’s return to the district tournament was a rough one. After having missed the playoffs last season, the Spartans were beaten in overtime by Jackson in the first round and Kidanu sealed their postseason fate Saturday.
Stanwood was led by six seniors.
“We had a great senior class, Stanwood coach Brian Hunter said. “That’s the hardest part about it, it was their last game.
“I am proud of the guys, they went out and played hard every night,” Hunter said. “It was a great effort by the team and we really appreciate all the community support.”

Shorewood 71, Marysville-Pilchuck 65 (OT): At Mill Creek, M-P opened the first quarter with a 22-11 run, but Shorewood pecked away at the score to stay alive in the District 1 4A playoffs. Thunderbirds sophomore John Allen (17 points), was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in overtime to help seal the victory. Teammate Brock Hartman led the team with 19 points and Clinton Reddie added 16. Shorewood plays Jackson in a loser-out game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Jackson High School. Nathan Lozeau had a game-high 21 points for the Tomahawks and teammate Jared Stohl chipped in 18.

Overlake 51, Coupeville 48: At Mountlake Terrace, Lexi Barker (20 points) and Hillary Barker (13) led Overlake with a combined 33 points to help them gain the third seed for the state playoffs. With the loss Coupeville is the fourth seed. Jennifer Bailey led the Wolves with 16 points and Beth Mouw added 11.

The loss snapped Shoreline Christian’s 23-game winning streak. Both Evergreen Lutheran and Shoreline Christian will be No. 1 seeds in the Class B state tournament.
