MONROE – Carlos Martinez will be formally sworn in as a Monroe School Board member Monday.

Martinez, a sergeant with the Monroe Police Department, was appointed this week to fill the District 2 seat left by Dean Adams, who resigned after pleading guilty to forgery charges stemming from his Oak Harbor law practice.

Martinez, who also is fluent in Spanish, has lived in Monroe for 17 years and is well respected in the community, board President Tom MacIntyre said. “He’ll bring a nice dimension to our board.”

Six people applied for the seat, with four called in for interviews.

Everett High School administrators put the kibosh on a senior tradition, in which students run down hallways cheering before the final bell on their last day of classes, by locking the school’s doors on Tuesday.

The run poses a safety hazard and disrupts learning, Everett School District spokeswoman Mary Waggoner said.

“There’s a lot of ways to celebrate the end of high school without putting themselves and the district in danger running through the hallways,” she said. “You don’t run in hallways. That’s a basic tenet of schools.”

Students are fuming. “I don’t think anyone’s ever got hurt in this. Nobody’s ever run fast enough. … It’s just our celebration because we’re finally done,” said Brittney Griffin, 18.

Police want to speak with three young boys who may have witnessed a fight and shooting June 4.

The boys, between the ages of 8 and 12, may have seen a fight between two men in the 400 block of Avenue C, police said. One man was shot in the leg and the other man was struck with a weapon. Both were treated at local hospitals.

Police continue to investigate the case and are hoping to speak with the boys who left the scene before they could be identified. Anyone with information is asked to call police Sgt. Fred Havener at 360-568-0888.
